In many ways, management of technology is not a new field. The beginnings of technology management can be traced to the 1950s, when R&D management ideas were developed; this was a period characterized by plentiful resources to R&D. During the 1960s and 1970s, there was interest in understanding innovation. However, as we entered the last quarter of the twentieth century, the impact of global competition was keenly felt, and the U.S. economy went through a wrenching period of restructuring. Consequently, there was renewed attention to technology. The current renditions of management of technology reflect the altered views on technology in light of the new realities. In our exposition of the management of technology, we will view firms as open systems: sets of interrelated activities that interface with the environment. Thus, a firm is viewed as a whole, and any activity that a firm does is meaningful only to the extent that it contributes something to the whole function of the firm. Further, the firm interfaces with the environment at multiple fronts—customers, competitors, government, labor markets, suppliers, and so on. Modern management theories accept the open-systems view of organizations as a given and therefore argue that the effectiveness of each firm is dependent on how it successfully interfaces with the environment. To develop ideas about the management of technology within an open-systems view, we will employ four major concepts: (1) the firm as a value chain, (2) industries as competitive domains, (3) forms of technological change, and (4) value creation and competitive advantage.
